Base of 5th metatarsal fracture (ankle radiograph)

Case contributed by Dr Jeremy Jones

Inversion injury. Pain in the right ankle.

Patient Data

Age: 46
Gender: Female

Soft tissue swelling, but a normal ankle joint with no tibial or fibular injury. Normal talus.

However, on the lateral view there is a minimally displaced base-of-5th metatarsal fracture.

Case Discussion

Base of 5th metatarsal fracture is no an uncommon fracture.  However, it can easily be missed on an ankle radiograph by the unsuspecting reporter.  It must be differentiated from an unfused apophysis.
