11 pairs of ribs and lumbosacral transitional vertebra

Case contributed by Dr Yair Glick

Presentation

Abdominal pain and vomiting. No significant medical history.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Female

No pathology seen on the chest or abdominopelvic films.
Intrauterine device projected onto the sacrum.

Incidentally noted 11 pairs of ribs and lumbosacral transitional vertebra - sacralization of L5.

Case Discussion

Since 11 rib pairs can be counted on the upright frontal chest film, one can confidently determine that the lumbosacral transitional vertebra is, in fact, a sacralized L5 vertebra.
