Salad oil sign

Last revised by Andrew Murphy on 27 Sep 2021

The salad oil sign also referred to as the droplet sign, is characterized by small rounded high T2 signal foci within a breast implant on MRI studies and represents water droplets or small amounts of gas within the silicone. It also can be characterized as hypointense foci on the water-suppressed sequences.

This imaging sign is non-specific and should not be used alone to diagnose an intracapsular breast rupture 1.
